When to prune persimmon trees
Prune persimmons in late winter, while the tree is bare and dormant, and keep it light: mostly thinning cuts. Don’t hard-prune in fall while the leaves are still on.

- Prune now
- Wait
- Don’t prune now
- Wait Wait until the leaves have dropped and the tree is fully dormant.
- Prune now The tree is bare and dormant. You can see every branch, and nothing is lost from the leaves.
- Wait Remove dead wood and suckers only. Save shaping for late winter.
- Don’t prune now The leaves are still sending stored food back into the tree. Hard cuts now can also push tender growth before frost.
How to cut: Keep pruning light, mostly thinning cuts. Persimmon wood is brittle, so thin heavy fruiting limbs rather than heading them back.

Months are grouped into broad USDA zone bands, so local weather, elevation and the plant itself still have the final say.
