When to prune peach and nectarine trees

- Don’t prune now Fall and early-winter cuts expose the tree to winter injury and canker infections.
- Wait Outside the main window. Late winter, just before growth starts, is best.
- Prune now Late winter: you can see which fruit buds survived the cold and prune to match.
- Wait On young trees, light summer pruning is fine through mid-July. Save the main pruning for late winter.
How to cut: Aim for an open, bowl-shaped tree. Peaches fruit on last year’s growth, so keep plenty of 1-year-old shoots.
