Pruning roses might seem intimidating, but with the right techniques and timing, you'll be rewarded with healthier plants and more abundant blooms.
When to Prune
The best time to prune most roses is in late winter or early spring, just as the buds begin to swell. In most regions, this is February to April.
Basic Pruning Steps
- Remove dead, damaged, or diseased canes first
- Cut at a 45-degree angle, about 1/4 inch above an outward-facing bud
- Remove crossing branches to improve air circulation
- Shape the plant to an open vase form
