When to prune oak trees
Prune oaks in winter, while they’re dormant. In the Midwest and East, don’t prune from April through July. In Texas, avoid February through June. Fresh cuts attract the beetles that spread oak wilt.

- Prune now
- Wait
- Don’t prune now
- Prune now Winter is the safe season. The beetles that spread oak wilt aren’t active.
- Wait Lower risk, but not the safest time. Wait for winter unless a branch is broken.
- Don’t prune now Sap beetles that spread oak wilt are active. Fresh cuts attract them. If storm damage can’t wait, paint the cut right away.
How to cut: Make cuts just outside the branch collar. Oaks are the exception to “no wound paint”: in risky months, paint fresh cuts right away.

Months are grouped into broad USDA zone bands, so local weather, elevation and the plant itself still have the final say.
